SOME PRACTICAL ADVICE AND IMPORTANT PERSPECTIVES

TO PARENTS OF TEENAGERS AND YOUNG ADULTS

  1. A child becomes a teenager when he/she REALIZES that not all adults are perfect. A teenager becomes an adult when he/she ACCEPTS that not all adults are perfect. (Interesting also then how many of us still have a lot left in us of our adolescence!!)
  2. It is quite normal that there will be times that you would not recognise the child whom you have raise. Adolescence is by DEFINITION maladjustment. This implies behaviour from your adolescent child which can often be confusing, horrifying as well as seemingly desperately "abnormal".
  3. Choose to manage the inevitable: The adult - child relationship has to DIE before an adult - adult relationship can be established.  This transition needs to be managed and the challenge therein contained leaves many a parent of teenagers in desperation very often.
  4. PLEASE ask if you are unsure. You do not as a parent HAVE to do this alone.  It is not a test which you have to pass. It is a relationship which you must save!
  5. Please feel free to contact us on admin@rbgcc.co.za right NOW, 24/7, should you feel ANY need to only even simply discuss some of your concerns about your child.  You might even feel that it is too late already : I strongly believe that while there is LIFE, there is HOPE. Again, help IS available.
